Day 3 - Thursday, January 13

Today we woke up early to follow Don to Ultimate Automotive in Albert Lea. By 7:15 we had dropped our girl off, dropped Don off at work and were heading back to Don and Glenda’s house in Don’s Yukon. By letting us borrow the Yukon and make ourselves comfortable in their home, Don and Glenda blessed us once again. We were both able to relax and Miguel was able to get some extra rest after a couple of stressful days of driving. They offered their food, use of their computer and anything else we needed!

Hoy nos levantamos temprano para seguirle a Don hasta Ultimate Automotive en Alberta Lea. A las 7:15 ya habíamos dejado la Suburban con el mecánico y Don en su trabajo e íbamos de regreso a la casa de Don y Glenda en el Yukón de ellos. Una vez más fuimos bendecidos por parte de Don y Glenda, quienes nos prestaron su Yukón y nos invitaron a sentirnos en casa mientras se arreglaba la Suburban. Los dos pudimos relajarnos y Miguel pudo descansar después de unos días estresantes de manejar. ¡Nos ofrecieron su comida, uso de su computadora y lo que fuera que necesitábamos!

Later in the morning Don called with the diagnosis: the heater core was full of gunk and flushing it out hadn’t helped. We would have to install a new heater core. With Don’s employee discount at Napa we got the $70 heater core for $25, but the labor was what was really going to be expensive. They would have to tear apart the dash and some stuff behind it just to get to the heater core, a job that would take 5-6 hours. Don had already told the guys at Ultimate to go ahead and do the work; he would pay the bill up front and work it out later with us. So by the time he called us, the work was already started.

Más al rato Don nos hablo con el diagnostico: el núcleo de la calefacción estaba llena de basura y ni siquiera lavándolo funcionaba. Íbamos a tener que instalar un nuevo núcleo. Con el descuento de empleado de Don en el Napa nos dieron el núcleo en $25 cuando costaba $70 originalmente, pero lo que nos iba a salir muy caro era la mano de obra. Tendrían que quitar el tablero y unas cuantas cosas más solo para alcanzar el núcleo, un trabajo que iba a durar de 5 a 6 horas. Don ya le había dicho al mecánico que la arreglara. El pagaría la cuenta y después se arreglaba con nosotros. Así que, para cuando el nos hablo, ya habían comenzado a arreglar el núcleo.

As everything unfolded for the heater to be fixed, we saw once again our Father’s perfect attention to detail. Not only had He arranged for the heater to quit right before we arrived at the home of a Napa Auto Parts employee, but Don and Glenda also have a very close relationship with Scott and Caressa (our Pastor and his wife from Tillicum Baptist). Their closeness with Scott and their own years in ministry inspired Don and Glenda to contact Scott right away to see if TBC could help cover the part of our bill that we wouldn’t be able to cover. Right around lunch time Scott called to say that he didn’t see any problem with that and TBC would cover what Miguel and I weren’t able to cover. So, before our Suburban was even fixed, the Lord had already provided the money to pay for it!

Conforme pasaban las cosas par arreglar la calefacción, vimos una vez mas el cuidado perfecto que nos da nuestro Padre. No tan solo había acomodado que se descompusiera la calefacción justo antes de llegar con un empleado de Auto Partes Napa, sino que también tomo en cuanta que Don y Glenda tienen una amistad muy fuerte con Scott y Caressa (nuestro pastor y su esposa de Tacoma). Su amistad con Scott y sus propios anos en el ministerio inspiraron a Don y Glenda a ponerse en contacto con Scott de inmediato para ver si la iglesia de Tilicum nos ayudaba a pagar la parte de la cuenta que nosotros no podríamos pagar. A la hora de comer Scott nos hablo para decir que estaba bien y que la iglesia iba a pagar lo que nosotros no alcanzábamos a pagar. Entonces, antes de que terminaran de arreglar la Suburban, el Señor ya había provisto el dinero para pagarla.

Not only that, but there’s another element to this story. On Sunday, before we left on our trip, Miguel and I said goodbye to Sebring Friends Church, where our good friend, Quint, pastors. We had attended Sebring Friends several times during our time in Ohio because of the friendships we have with certain people there. On Sunday the members of Sebring friends doubly blessed us. First, the elders and congregation prayed for us – not just for safety on our trip, but a prayer of commissioning. Essentially, they sent us off with their prayers and blessings to begin the ministry the Lord has waiting for us in Tacoma. After that, they took a love offering for us and gave us a generous amount of money to help us on our trip. As it turns out, exactly the amount that we still had of the money we had received from Sebring Friends was enough to pay for our half of fixing the heater core. As we talked about it before bed, Miguel and I agreed that we feel supported and embraced by these two churches – the one that sent us and the one that will receive us – because they made it possible for us to cross that country with heat in our Suburban!

No tan solo eso, pero hay otra parte de esta historia. El domingo antes de irnos al viaje, Miguel y yo nos despedimos de la iglesia Sebring Friends, donde nuestro amigo, Quint es el pastor. Habíamos asistido esa iglesia varias veces durante nuestro tiempo en Ohio debido a las amistades que tenemos allí. El domingo los miembros de la iglesia nos dieron una doble bendición. Primero, los ancianos y la congregación oraron por nosotros – no tan solo que nos fuera bien en el viaje, sino una oración de comisión. En esencia, no mandaron a Tacoma con sus oraciones y bendición para comenzar el ministerio que Dios tiene para nosotros allá. Después de orar, levantaron una ofrenda especial para nosotros y nos regalaron dinero para ayudarnos en el viaje. Resulta que lo que nos quedaba del dinero que nos habían regalado de la iglesia fue exactamente suficiente para pagar nuestra mitad del costo de la reparación de la calefacción. Miguel y yo estamos de acuerdo que nos sentimos apoyados y abrazados por estas do iglesias – la que nos mando y la que nos recibirá – porque ellos hicieron posible que podemos cruzar el país con calorcito en la Suburban!

By 4:00 the Suburban was fixed and heating better than ever! With Don’s help, we picked her up from Ultimate and brought her home. Again, God’s favor was upon us because Don’s friend at Ultimate gave him/us a discount of almost $100 off the work they had done.

Para las 4:00 p.m. la Suburban estaba arreglada ¡y se calentaba mejor que nunca! Con la ayuda de Don, la recogimos del mecánico y la trajimos a casa. Una vez mas sentimos el favor de Dios porque el mecánico le dio/nos rebajo casi $100 el costo de la mano de obra.

We enjoyed a leisurely evening with Don and Glenda and their grandson, Keegan, before heading to bed early. The Suburban was fixed in one day, the Lord provided like we knew He would and tomorrow we will drive to Wall, South Dakota with His help.

Pasamos una tarde relajante con Don y Glenda y su nieto, Keegan, antes de acostarnos temprano. La Suburban se pudo arreglar en un día, Dios proveyó como sabíamos que lo iba a hacer y mañana manejaremos a Wall, South Dakota con Su ayuda.

Day 2 - Wednesday, January 12

This morning we woke up in the cozy home of Kevin and Tammy to the scent of coffee and homemade cinnamon scones - yum! Had to get that recipe!

Esta manana el olor de cafe y panes de canela nos desperto en la casa de Kevin y Tammy - que rico! Tuve que conseguir esa receta!

After a leisurely breakfast and more chatting, we finally got ourselves out the door and down the road...too far down the road, in fact! Yep, we were so busy looking at the sights that we missed the turn Kevin had told us about. After backtracking, another wrong turn and making our way back to the right highway, we finally got out of Chicago about 2 hours after we'd left Kevin and Tammy's house! Grr. Here are a few curious city sights we saw along the way...


Despues de un desayuno relajado y mas platicar, por fin salimos de la casa y volvimos a la carretera...muy lejos en la carretera, de hecho! Estabamos tan entretenidos con las cosas alrededor que nos pasamos la vuelta donde nos habia dicho Kevin. Tuvimos que regresar, tomamos otra carretera quivocada y duramos mucho rato en encontrar la carretera adecuada. Cuando por fin salimos de Chicago habian pasado 2 horas desde que salimos de la casa de Kevin y Tammy! Grr. Aqui estan unas fotos de cosas curiosas que miramos en el camino...

We crossed the Mississippe River again - this time much further North and heading West!

Volvimos a cruzar el Rio Mississippi - esta vez mucho mas al Norte y yendo al oeste

We were running later than we'd hoped, but the Suburban was running strong, the highways were clear and the sun even came out at times, so we were confident that we could arrive at our destination without problems and before it got too late. As usual, Miguel's job is to drive and Shawna's job is to give him snacks and change the cd whenever necessary. We clipped along at a good pace and when we crossed the line into Minnesota we were happy that we only had another 112 miles to go. Gradually we started to feel a little more chilly and it seemed like lots of cold air was coming in. But the Suburban is old and has lots of leaks, so we just turned the heat up and said, "It must be a lot colder here in Minnesota!" Alas, that was not the case. In fact, our heater was quitting on us and the more we turned it up the colder we got! So we left it on low to take the edge off the cold and bundled up as much as we could. God sent us a beautiful sunset to take our mind off the cold for a while, but once the sun was down it was more noticeable! At 10 degrees outside, it was a cold couple of hours and we were very happy to arrive at our warm destination and the hot meal waiting for us in Albert Lea, at the home of Don and Glenda, friends of Pastor Scott, our pastor at Tillicum Baptist in Tacoma.

Veniamos retrasados, pero la Suburban andaba bien, las calles estaban limpias y hasta salia el sol en ratitos, asi que estabamos confiados que podiamos llegar a nuestro destino sin problema y sin que se hiciera muy noche. Como siempre, el trabajo de Miguel es manejar y el trabajo de Shawna es darle comida y cambiar los cds cuando se ocupa. Avanzamos a buen tiempo y cuando entramos a Minnesota estabamos contentos que solo faltaban 112 millas para llegar. De repente empezamos a sentir mas frio y parecia que entraba mucho mas aire fro a la Suburban. Pero la Suburban esta vieja y el aire se mete por muchos lados, asi que subimos la calefaccion y dijimos, "Ha de estar haciendo mas frio aqui en Minnesota!" Desafortunadamente, no era asi. En realidad,

la calefaccion se nos estaba descomponiendo y entre mas la subiamos mas frio sentiamos! No nos quedaba otra opcion mas que abrigarnos bien y aguantar el frio. Dios nos mando un hermoso atardecer para distraernos un rato, pero una vez bajandose el sol, se sentia aun mas! Estaba a 10 grados farenheit afuera y fue un gran alivio llegar a nuestro destino y la cena caliente que nos esperaba en Albert Lea en la casa de Don y Glenda, amigos del Pastor Scott de la iglesia de Tacoma.

As He always does, the Lord had everything under control. It turns out that Don works for Napa Auto parts here in town and knows all the mechanics around. He made a plan with us to get up early and get the Suburban checked with a trustworthy mechanicto see what the problem is. Not only that, but he'll buy the parts for us with his employee discount, which will save us some money! Now we just have to wait and see how big the problem is and if we will contine our journey tomorrow or if we will spend another day in cold Albert Lea. It's all in our Father's capable hands and we know He will take good care of us!

Como siempre, el Senor tenia todo bajo control. Resulta que Don trabaja en el auto partes Napa aqui en el pueblo y conoce a todos los mecanicos de aqui. Hicimos un plan de levantarnos temprano y llevar la Suburban con un mecanico de confianza para que averiguan el problema. Ademas, Don va a comprar las partes con su descuento de empleado para ayudarnos a ahorrar dinero en eso! Ahora solo nos queda esperar para ver que tan grande esta el problema para saber si continuaremos nuestro viaje manana o si vamos a pasar otro dia en el frio de Albert Lea. Todo esta en las buenas manos de nuestro Padre y sabemos que El nos cuidara muy bien!
